"Can You Feel the Dear This night" is a song from Disney's 1994 animated picture The Lion King [i] equanimous by Elton John with lyrics by Tim Rice.[2] It was described by Don Hahn (the film's producer), Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff (the film'due south directors) as having "the most diverse history" in the film. Information technology was a chart hit in the UK, peaking at number 14 on the UK Singles Chart,[two] and accomplished fifty-fifty more than success in the Usa, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The vocal was a number-one hit in Canada and France. At the 67th Academy Awards in March 1995 it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The same year the vocal too won Elton John the Grammy Award for Best Male person Pop Vocal Performance.

The vocal, written by Tim Rice and Elton John, was performed in the film by Kristle Edwards (too known as Kristle Murden), Joseph Williams, Sally Dworsky, Nathan Lane, and Ernie Sabella, while another version used in the film's closing credits was performed past Elton John. It won the 1994 Academy Award for Best Original Song,[2] and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. It as well earned Elton John the Grammy Honour for Best Male Popular Song Functioning.

The single release of John'southward recording (the endmost credits version) peaked at number one on the Billboard Developed Contemporary chart for eight weeks.[5] Information technology too sold 500,000+ units in France.[half dozen]

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet described "Can You lot Experience the Love Tonight" as a "really expert carol".[7] Heather Phares from AllMusic stated that it is a "Lion King classic".[eight] Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "John'southward distinctive voice slices through the quasi-orchestral tone of this ability ballad". He added, "He taps into the song's pensive lyric, giving it a warm, human dimension that would exist lost on a lesser performer."[ix] Troy J. Augusto from Cashbox commented, "From Hollywood'due south The King of beasts Male monarch soundtrack comes the always welcome voice of Elton John, who takes a stab at reclaiming his talent for crossover hitmaking with this orchestrated ballad, his most affecting single choice in years." David Browne from Amusement Weekly noted that John's "croon and piano skills are crumbling quite well".[xi] Another editor, Leah Greenblatt, described the song as a "soaring Simba tribute".[12] A reviewer from Expressen called it a "typical Elton ballad with echoes of several of his old successes".[13] Ron Vicious and Diane Rufer from the Gavin Written report said it is "surehoped-for a summertime of '94 anthem."[14] Alan Jones from Music Calendar week gave information technology 4 out of v, noting that it is "a heavily orchestrated and dead slow carol" and "one of Elton'south more memorable recent melodies."[15] The Network Xl deemed information technology an "elegant carol".[16] People Magazine called it "sappy", adding that it is "certain to be song of the year".[17] In 2016, David Ehrlich of the Rolling Stone magazine ranked John's operation of the vocal at the 67th Academy Awards in 1995 at number 12.[eighteen] British newspaper The Staffordshire Sentinel said that "Can You Feel the Love This night" "creates the perfect romantic temper".[19]

According to a 2022 survey by OnBuy establish that couples that chose Can You Feel The Love Tonight as the song for the beginning trip the light fantastic toe at their wedding were more probable to stay together, with 77% of respondents who chose the vocal remaining in their matrimony.[20]

The song was planned to be sung only by Timon and Pumbaa, merely Elton John disliked the comical nature of the concept. John declared that "Tin You Feel the Love Tonight" was meant to follow "Disney's tradition of bang-up love songs", and that information technology could "express the lions' feelings for each other far better than dialogue could". The terminal upshot was the song mainly sung past an off-screen voice (Kristle Edwards) with curt lines from Simba (Joseph Williams) and Nala (Sally Dworsky), and the beginning and end parts by Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella). It also included Zulu vocals that, while by and large muted in the on-screen version, were much more prominently featured in the audio-only releases.[21] The unmarried version contains background vocals by Robert Englund, Rick Astley, Gary Barlow and former collaborator Kiki Dee.

Festival of the Lion Rex [edit]

In Walt Disney World'southward Beast Kingdom's Festival of the Lion King, the song is sung past Nakawa and Kibibi. As they sing, two ballet dancers (one male, ane female) dressed as birds dance on the stage. After the main chorus is sung, the male person bird dancer attaches his partner to a harness that allows her to fly through the air.

Cover versions [edit]

English popular group S Club, Sara Paxton and Elliott Yamin all covered the vocal for Disneymania, Disneymania 4 and Disneymania 6, respectively. Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, and Billy Eichner performed the song every bit Nala, Simba, Pumbaa, and Timon, respectively, in the 2022 remake of The Lion Male monarch, directed past Jon Favreau.[22] In April 2022 Christina Aguilera performed the song for the ABC's telly special, The Disney Family unit Singalong.[23] [24]
